- From their son Niels Hansen's memoir "Optegnelser om Mit Levnedsl?b" published in 1925:
My mother, Ane Margrethe Andersdatter, was born in Asperup on November 28, 1821. She had only one sister, living at Stadagerg?rd, right beside our family-farm. My mother was of a rather melancholy temperament, but was fortified by her deep faith in God; which helped her carry on through the sorrowful and trying times after the death of our father, as she was a widow with five small children to care for.
Our family-farm, situated in the so called "Strandgyde" (Beach-Alley) in Baaring, had 45 T?nder Land of fields and 5 T?nder Land of wood-land. I always had the feeling that we were struggling to get the necessary income - which cast a shadow over our home and left a mark on our mother's sorrowing state of mind. Later, I realized that the cause of the struggling was due to poor management of our farm.
We were, as mentioned, five siblings and I was the oldest. Next was Maren Dorthea, later married to free-school teacher Thomas N?rrelund; next Anine, later married to merchant Mose in F?borg; next Stine, married to the owner of a farm in Kustrup - Counsellor Thomas Jensen; and last Anders Simon, later married to Mathea J?rgensen.
In our home we were taught first of all to obey, and our mother tried her utmost to educate us. We were brought up in a life of frugality, which later stood us in good stead.
My father's long illness and death was difficult for all of us, but mostly for our mother who became greatly depressed. However, she found solace in her deep faith and received help and consolation from her sister, my aunt, a neighbour to us. She was married to Simon J?rgensen a well-learned Christian and a good farmer. My aunt was a strong, clever woman with a lighter outlook on life than my mother's. There were no children in their marriage, and since they were well off they also helped us economically. And, they became foster-parents for my oldest sister, Maren Dorthea Hansdatter.
Well after a year from my father's death, my mother Ane Margrethe one day brought me into the parlour, and I could feel something serious was at hand. After a bit of hesitation and with great emotion she asked if I would mind getting a new father. "Depends on who it is," I answered. "Well, it is Klaus Pedersen," my mother said. "Well, I do not mind that at all," I answered without hesitation.
This answer I often later wondered about, that I so trustingly accepted him as my father, even if in many ways my feelings were against having a step-father. I had a hard time at the start calling him father, but he was wise and tactful not to insist, and soon it became natural for me. Mother was very relieved that I approved of her decision to marry and thus improve the well-being of our family - Klaus Pedersen proved to be a very capable farmer and also an extremely right-thinking, kind person and a good Christian.
He was a widower with no children, and with him my mother regained her equilibrium and blossomed forth happily, and all of us children got a loving father, who took charge of both our spiritual and scholarly growth.
The death of her second husband Claus Pedersen was a great loss for my mother, whose depressive tendencies again came to the surface, luckily my sister Synn?ve took over the farm management and became owner of Dyrh?j.
