- Anders J?rgensen was a farmer (G?rdmand) in B?ring, Asperup parish. He was among the first in the community to form a small free-school. In 1857-58, he and a group of other parents engaged a teacher, Lars Frederiksen (later a farmer in Ryslinge). They did this with very limited resources, for a school-room they rented a room in a house called "Trappen," meaning "step" because there were high steps leading up to the school-room. When school started they had no benches for the children to sit on. Until the carpenter built them, the children sat on loss planks atop bricks. It only lasted for three or four years. However, the need for a such a personal and natural method of teaching children was greatly felt and so later a new school would be restarted.

Middelfart newspaper obituary for Anders J?rgensen, published October 28, 1863:
"On October 27, 1863 died one of our best and most prominent men, farm owner Anders J?rgensen of Baaring in Asperup parish . . . . He was born in Baaring on January 26, 1817 and lived to 47 years old. He was an extra-ordinarily clever man and he greatly influence those around him . . . He was not what you would call well spoken, but when he talked it was with conviction, leaving the impression with all who listened that you could trust what this clever man said. Therefore he was a friend to many people . . . also by earning plain and popular respect he developed a great influence on his surroundings. He was of individualistic character, a democrat and the ordinary man's friend, in the best of those meanings. He always spoke his mind openly and simply, it is in this way he often made his stand against others of different political observance. When such people came to know him better, they couldn't deny their respect for his fine character, strong disposition and great intelligence. Twice he has been the leader in the community, a member of the District committee, and a member of other commitions, and for several years he was the manager for the local fire-insurance company. While he carefully and lovingly took care of his home and surroundings, he also with great success and intelligence took care of the offices entrusted to him. It is only because of his illness that he wouldn't agree to his friends wishes that he should seek re-election. In his last years, because of his illness, he drew back into private life, but even in those last years his friends had great joy in seeing him at parties. Many of us will never forget that just a few days ago, while surrounded by friends he gave a toast to "Thyra Dannebod og alle danske Kvinder, der i hendes Aand hegne om gamle Danmark . . . ! (Thyra Dannebod and all danish women, who in her spirit take care of old Denmark . . . !)" The above words were written by Pastor M. Melbye of Asperup. (Thyra Dannebod, as wife of Old King Gorm, was the first queen of Denmark.)
Niels Hansen tells in his autobiography:
Anders J?rgensen was a highly gifted man and was a great influence, both at home and in the community. He was able to write in beautifully crafted language and had accumulated extensive knowledge -- which resulted in his being called to public office many times.
As well, many people sought his advice and help in personal matters; I too have benefitted from his kind concern. I happened on the day of my father's funeral, when the soil was thrown down onto the coffin - I could no longer restrain my desperate sorrow and loudly wailing I clutched my mother. At that moment my friend's father took my hand lovingly and led me away from the grave, all the while saying: "You do not have to cry any more dear boy, your father is not down in the dark grave, his soul has gone up to God in Heaven - from where he can look down and see you and your mother, and there you will all meet him again sometime." By hearing these heartfelt words peace started to flow into my grieving heart.
His widow carried on bringing up their children into becoming kind, well-adjusted and capable people. She became an excellent hostess for the Grundtvig Free-School movement, headed by Pastor Melbye -- stretching her economy to the utmost hosting the large school and church gathering. Somehow her calling was blessed and she was always able to provide for her family.
Finally a poem written by his good friend, Mr. Madsen, Alderman (R?dmand) for Asperup:
Look upon the long row of people,
following their friend to the grave -
that entrance to oblivion.
The Psalms are sung, the Bells have tolled,
the throngs disperse - it is over.
Thoughts like these - quiet but dark -
filled my Soul when came the message of death.
Later I could see the Light
and the chill of night did pass.
Again I was by your side in the Spring of Life,
hunting through the abundant fields.
Admiring the familiar green woods
that edge the majestic rolling sea.
And - sometimes much later -
we sat together in our rural homes,
and planned for times to come,
full of Justice, Truth, and Peace.
We all agreed on the final Goal,
although we fought over the way to go.
We all agreed to save the world -
from total annihilation.
Although those days have gone,
I count them among the few
where we felt a stirring and a breeze
from a better, brighter world.
Too soon you had to end your Pilgrim-song,
and now you have gone to dwell in Light.
The saving arms of God have opened wide,
And - we pray - have embraced your Spirit.
Heavily the Sorrow will fall upon your Wife,
Earthly comfort can not ease such grief.
We pray that God, who is the refuge for widows,
will come to her side and give her strength.
Far away from your grave, Life is buzzing,
but quietly I am saying my prayer
for you and your family, my greeting:
Rest in God's Peace!
