- Niels Andersen Juul was born on the Jylland peninsula (according to Stationsforstander C. Kragh's notes on the family Sode). He is possibly the son of Margrethe J?rgensdatter Juul and her husband Anders Pedersen Wers, the "Sognepr?st" (clergyman) for Gjerlev-Enslev parishes in Randers county between 1601 and his death in 1631. I know of no evidence to support the assertion that
Niels is their son. It seems to be soley based on the fact that ANDERS Pedersen Wers was married to Margrethe J?rgensdatter JUUL of JYLLAND - and thus the speculation that Niels ANDERSEN JUUL from JYLLAND might be their son.
Niels can be founded in the register for K?benhavn's Commune in 1603; he had received a scholarship to study and live there - he lived at "Regensen" and was "communieret" in 1603 under the name "Nicolaus Andre? Julius". In spite of his education he is referred to as "Vir probus, sed indoctus" (righteous, but uneducated) in the visitation of 1616. In 1621 he was doing better, he was preaching the text in the "Matth?us evangeliet, Textus Matth. 9, v. 35, 36, 37" (Gospel of Matthew, chapter 9, verses 35, 36, 37); here he was judged: "Bene docet, omnia ad gloriam dei conferre dona videtur" (well educated, highly regarded and trustworthy).
His first position on Bornholm was as the resident "Kapellan" (curate) for R?nne-Knudsker parish, and also the "Rektor" (rector) for the Latin school in R?nne. In 1609 he was made curate for Olsker under Pastor S?ren Bjerg. After S?ren Bjerg's death in 1613 he became the Clergyman (Sognepr?st) for Olsker-Allinge parishes in 1614, where he remained until his death in 1635. He married his predecessor's widow, Maren Lauridsdatter, and they are known to have had at least one child, a son named J?rgen Nielsen. Niels can be found mentioned in "Sognedegn" (deacon) Rasmus Pedersen Ravn's journal: "Borringholms kr?nike", page 181: "Anno 1635: D. 14de Hujus (Aprilis) d?de Hr. Niels Juul, Sognepr?st her til St. Ols og Allinge Kirker; havde v?ret Skolemester og Capellan udi R?nne tilforn, vel fortjent af dette Lands Folk; begravet d. 17de hujus" (In the year 1635: the 14th same month (April) died Sir Niels Juul, pastor her in St. Ole's and Allinge churches; was previously the headmaster and curate in R?nne, well regarded by the land's people; buried on the 17th same month).
In 1684 his son, J?rgen Nielsen, submitted a copy of the deed of conveyance for "Birdchedtz Gaardenn" to the Land Registry; the letter had been written by Jochum Grabow on October 2, 1628, when he transfered ownership of 1 Vdg. Olsker, (a.k.a. Birkesbr?ddeg?rd, Birkelsg?rd, Kirkebr?ddeg?rd, Br?ddeg?rd) to clergyman Niels Andersen Juul. The copy, signed by J?rgen Nielsen, is kept in the State Archives and reads as follows:

"This document bears witness that I, Jochum Grabow, have sold this farm called Birdchedtzgaard (Br?ddeg?rd) in Olsker parish, where Oluf. . . was living, and owed the yearly amount of 8 lbs. butter, 1 barrel of oats, 1 lamb, 1 goose, and 2 chickens. To the honest and learned man Mr. Niels Andersen Juul, pastor for (St.) Ole's Church, with this open letter I transfer the ownership of the above farm. I pledge to compensate Niels or his true heirs for any wrong done to said farm, due to my mistake, within six weeks and to vouch for the truth, with my own hand I sign this paper. Dated the 2nd of October in the year 1628."
A large gravestone was erected erected over Niels Andersen Juul and Maren Lauridsdatter. The stone is decorated with carvings of the four Evangelists and symbols concerning the Resurrection, which are surrounded by ornamental leaf-designs. In the center is the following inscription:

"In the year 1635, the 14th of April, died the honourable and learned man Mr. Niels Andersen, clergyman for (St.) Ole's and Allinge churches on Bornholm. With his dear wife Maren Lauritsdatter, who died in 1642, the 22nd of May, and now both rest with the Lord. God grant them, and all the chosen, a joyous Resurrection on the final day."
The tombstone was placed inside the church in the middle of the floor, and stayed there for many years until the floor had to be replaced; the stone was damaged during its relocation. In 1938 the stone was refurbished, it had been placed outside the church near the bell-tower. (See "Bornholmske Samlinger", volume 28, pages 136-138.)
