- Bertel Johansen obtained his tradesman citizenship license (borgerskab) for Sandvig on May 23, 1707. Elsebye Berildsdatter is mentioned several times in court documents for Hammershus judicial district, and it is there that we find proof that she was Berild Clausen's daughter: Lars Nielsen [a defendant in a case] held the opinion that Elseby Bartel [Johansen]'s testimony was not acceptable, as she was prosecutor Mogens Clausen's brother's daughter, and thus considered an unlawful witness.
An incident is recorded in the Hammershus court documents on October 18, 1714. Evidently there had been a confrontation between J?rgen Hansen's wife Agnes Hansdatter (c.1680-1764) and Elsebye Berildsdatter, which reads as follows:
Lorents Petersen (Krag) presented, on J?rgen Hansen's behalf, a written submission in the case between him and Bertel Johansen. The judge pronounced Lorents Petersen's observations to be odd. J?rgen Hansen's wife Agnes was not present, but Bertel's wife Elsebye was present. She explained that Agnes had told her that she was as thoroughly cynical as her father. Elsebye replied that it was not her father who had run away after a murder. Agnes replied that she would be a whore and hussy until she proved that there was someone in her family who was a murderer. Elsebye would take an oath that her father had not run away from the country for a murder. The case was admitted for appeal.
Proof that Barbara Berildsdatter is her sister can be found in the probate records after the death of Barbara's third husband Rasmus Jensen.
Bertel Johansen and Elseby Berildsdatter's grandson, Bertel Christian Sandvig (1752-1786), was a noted "Historiker og Litteraturhistoriker" (Historian and Literature Historian) in K?benhavn.
From the Hammershus Birketingbog 1702-1715:
July 21, 1710, page 240b: The Judge ordered that Niels Hansen take the judge's seat, so that Judicial District Bailiff's clerk Mogens Clausen could summon Mads Hartvig and Bertel Johansen for fighting each other Sunday the 6th of April. The judge ordered that the two be summoned, but neither had turned up in court. They were summoned to the next assembly.
August 11, 1710, page 241b: The two brawlers Mads Hartvig and Bertel Johansen were present. They had fought on the 6th of April to keep warm when it was cold.
August 20, 1714, page 340b:
J?rgen Hansen asked that Lorents Petersen should answer for him and his wife in the case against Bertel Johansen and his wife. It was allowed. Lorents Petersen believed that the testimony against J?rgen Hansen's wife could hurt her, so long as there was not contratestimony, which would be held at the next assembly. Bertel Johansen's wife Elsebye had cut grass on their land. Lorents Petersen summoned Elsebye Berildsdatter and her husband Bertil Johansen about the harm which she and her husband had committed this year and last year with "skelden og smelden paa gader og st?der" (yelling and banging on the streets and town) as well at home, and had threatened J?rgen Hansen on the 30th of July. The case should proceed at the next assembly and all the witnesses were present.
August 27, 1714, page 343a:
Judge Mogens Clausen saw the witnesses summoned for testimony in the case. Lorents Petersen had to go to court again and not lead contra witnesses in Bertel Johansen's summoned case. Christopher M?ller said he had witnessed a battle between J?rgen Hansen and his wife and Bertel Johansen and his wife. Bertel Johansen had allowed his wife to cut grass on J?rgen Hansen's land and Elsebye had called J?rgen Hansen murderous rabble. An opinion was not directed at him but on his brother [= Hans Hansen]. There were rakes and pitchforks with which they had threatened. Ole Larsen confirmed Christopher M?ller's story. Bertel Johansen presented a county council hearing from October 9, 1695 and the judgment from 20 October 1695. J?rgen Hansen felt that the sentencing of his brother Hans Hansen should not become his burden. Lorents Petersen said neither Bertel Johansen, his wife or anyone else could be reproached for "raste J?rgen Hansen det i n?sen naar man lyster" (hitting J?rgen Hansen in the nose when one desired). S?ren Michelsen told that the day after Christopher [Hansen] Snedker's wife gave birth Bertel's wife Elsebye came to S?ren Michelsen and said Bertel had smashed her crockery into pieces because she had danced with J?rgen Hansen at Christopher Snedker's wife's childbirth on Good Friday [30 March] 1714. And now Bertel Johansen called her J?rgen Hansen's whore. Margrethe Kirstine (S?ren Henrichsen's wife) confirmed that Elsebye had told that Bertel Johansen had smashed a copper vat, a half barrel and other crockery to pieces because she had been at the joiner's childbirth and had set "mine ?ynens Lyst" (my eye alight) on J?rgen Hansen and therefore she was always "hedde J?rgens Hansens hore" (called J?rgen Hansen's whore). Some time thereafter Elsebye had shown Margrethe Kirstine a soiled apron that Bertel had ruined because she had danced with J?rgen Hansen at the childbirth. Her husband had forbidden her to mention J?rgen Hansen other than as a devil and that she should ridicule J?rgen Hansen on road and trail. Bertel Johansen and his wife said that S?ren Michelsen and his wife Margrethe Kirstine's statements were not accurate. Rasmus Pedersen had heard Elsebye and Bertel Johansen quarrel in their living room. Out the window Elsebye said to Rasmus, that such had on Christmas Day, Easter and Pentecost, all for J?rgen Hansen's guilt, the devil placed the rogue in him. Elsebye had come to him three days ago to Rasmus Pedersen and said he might well have the same thought. Rasmus had previously heard Bertil call J?rgen Hansen a "grineren" (laughing stock), but now he calls him "fanden" (the devil).

Note: checked the Allinge-Sandvig register from 1760 through 1787, no burial record found for Elsebye Berildsdatter. The Olsker-Allinge register is missing the burial records for the period November 1751 through December 1759; it seems probable that Elsebye died during this period. - Norman Madsen
