- The family-name has been variously spelled: Low, Lov, Loug, Lou, and Lau. Hans Lou's place of birth is not known, nor who his parents were; there is a Lau family in the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein so it is possible that the family has its roots in northern Germany. Hans Lou held title to the 37 Slg. ?ker parish from 1625. However, it appears that Jens Brand resided at the farm between 1625 and 1672; according to Kure's farm-list Hans Lou resided in ?kirkeby. The 37 Slg. in ?ker parish was known as Torneg?rd at the time he purchased it. Although it was listed for many years as Torneg?rd, in the common parlance - because of the Lov/Low/Lou/Lau-family - it eventually became known as "Lowegaard" (later spelled: Laueg?rd). The family owned the farm for several generations; however, it later went into Kofoed family ownership in 1761. Laueg?rd's area is estimated to amount to 118 "t?nder" (estimated produce in barrels) land, where of 8 t?nder are meadow and the rest consist of crop land.
The ?ker-?kirkeby parish register begins in 1648, and we find the widow "Karen Hans Lovs" getting remarried on January 6, 1649, so it is probable that Hans Lou died in late 1647. Karen Hansdatter probably died of plague, which ravaged Bornholm 1653-54. In ?ker-?kirkeby parish alone 557 people perished from the plague during that 2 year period.

(Note: the above burial can not be for the Mogens born in 1653, as his probate in 1705 states that he was 1/2 brother to Peder Hansen Lou of ?stermarie. Possible this is the burial record of Gregers born in 1658?)

The church for ?kirkeby township and ?ker parish is located just outside of the township of ?kirkeby proper, so paradoxically enough the town that draws its name from the "River Church" (Aae Kirke) does not actually have a church within its municipal boundries at all. ?kirkeby was the traditional seat of Bornholm's judiciary authority, its "Landsting" (Parliament), and the Aae Kirke was used as their meeting place.
